Well, I was in one of the LFS today and saw that they were selling two 2-2.5 inch African Arowanas for 30 dollars each. I was tempted to purchase one of the arowana but decided to do some research before I buy. As found thru this site, not too many people raise this kind of arowana. Why?
Please give me the pro's and con's.

My pro's and con's:
Pros:
1. Nobody that I know who raises arowana have one of these.
2. It will be something different to see instead of the australians, silvers, and rainbows that everyone I know have around town.

Cons:
1. Looking thru pictures of adult African arowana, there is no color to them. (maybe I'm just looking at poor picture qualities)

For those owners of this species, convince me...

you should just keep the fish if you are interested in it, not based on being convinced by others...keep what you like :)

for info and photos on keeping African arows check this article out as it should give you a thorough background and instruction on keeping the species:

african arowana are very calm fish they only eat black worms not many people keep them is becasue there color its only brown and they don't eat fish. but i think african arowana is not a bad fish to keep with angle and other feed that don't eat others.

its all up to you wether you want to give them a shot...I know I would since ive had jardinis and silvers before and know what a leichardti and black arowana looks like at adult sizes...i just want to try raising a african arowana myself as these are just the fish you can get that doesn't get big like the more monster Arapaima. Its as close as you can get to an arapaima in your home

as young they do best on blackworms, but they definitely will eat other foods over the course of their lives. once they are past the sensitive size they will take pellets, bloodworms, and will even take feeders (not advised, but could work as a treat).--

They are an excellent Monster Fish keeper, Beautiful!!!! You have to log on to John PTC webcam and see how they look when big (at least 24"). The ones he has are huge there skin texture, shape, and behavior one of a kind! Have one my self trying to grow out he's 10 inches .

They are right they are delicate when raising when small..

IMO, an African arowana is like an arapaima that only gets to 3 feet. This impression is bolstered by the recent reclassification of the family Osteoglossidae, in which Arapaima gigas and Heterotis niloticus were removed and placed in the new family Arapaimatidae.

I have a 10 incher right now and like him alot, they are great gravel cleaners, and very active and peaceful fish.. Not the greatest looking, but i still like mine.. Looks like a swiming turd..
