I making my 55 into an african biotope tank, just so the fish feel at home... I want to have a bichir (Polypterus delhezi) or two and a leopard bush fish. I'm thinking a sand substrate and a large piece of driftwood, but what else is there where they live?. What should the ph, lighting and other things be like... Thanks!

Africa is a big continent with alot of different fish ;)

Arican butterfly fish are cool to have up top if you have bichers on the substrate and ctenopomas in the mid-water,

that is a good Idea with the Butterfly fish to and also African Knifes but be careful Oof the Butterfly fish get big ones 3-4 inches and with lower jaw Bichirs don,t want them eating the Butterfly fish.

I agree butterflies would be good as well as possibly a knife. You could also try some of the larger African tetras, but they are somewhat pricey.

You could get some anubias to anchor to the driftwood and maybe some tiger lotus. I had a tiger lotus in a 20 gallon tank with normal smaller gravel and two of the standard 20 gallon florescents, no ferts or anything and it basically exploded. Took over the entire surface. Also aponogetons are normally pretty easy plants and can do well without special lighting or substrate. I had one get to around 6' long in a 55 gallon before (bottom to top, and crumpled across the entire length of the tank. probably would have been taller than me if I took it out)

Done!!! Just need a few more congo tetras... Stock-list is
-2x Sengals
-1x ctenopoma
-3x (soon to be 5) Congo tetras
Am I overstocked at all? Filtration is a AC110... WC 25% a week.
Pics :headbang2:grinno:
Im also gonna put more floating plats at the surface
