so heres the deal...my african brown knife came down with the ich. i would like to say that after a quick week in the hospital tank with some salt and heat the little bugger is looking better than ever!
if any of you have questions about this it has been answered in these forums several times and i am sure a search would bring up numerous results. but for those who are weary like me, this is the way to go.
a few things to remember when adding salt and raising temperature:
take water from the aquarium you are treating and put it in a cup and completely dissolve salt in it before adding.
always add SLOWLY so you do not shock the fish.
stay away from salts with iodide, potassium, and anti caking agents. these can become harmful gasses with the right ph level. the less additives the better.
a good rule of thumb is 1 tbsp to every 5 gallons of water.
slowly raise heat as well and try to avoid sudden drops and spikes in the temperature.
87 degrees is a good starting point though some strains of ich have lived to and through 91 degrees.
also dont forget the daily water changes and vacuums...40 to 50 percent. i treated 3 days after the last spots went away and weve been clear for a week and a half now!
with a little patience and effort this can do wonders!
