African brown knife and cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've found that most knives aren't aggressive enough to survive with cichlids for a long period. There are always exceptions to the rule though. If you really want to try it make sure there are plenty of hiding places so the knife can have some peace and make sure to keep an eye on them.

depends, I had one live in my mixed cichlid community for over a year and it grew huge. not only would it stand up to the cichlids it lived happily with a flowerhorn i was growing out for a few months too.
i didnt find mine to be delicate or timid at all. but thats why we have forums, so we can get multiple opinions. just cause it worked for me doesnt mean it would work for you.

You could always lay a slate up against the glass and make a hide that only the knife can access. that way he can escape if he is being attacked.

The slate cave would work, otherwise they sell knifefish tubes that would be a good idea for them. My biggest concern would be that the tankmates would try to nip the fin, but that would all depend on the temperament of everyone involved. I love knifefish and say that if you want one then go ahead and try it, but have a backup plan in place in case it doesn't work out.

I have a black ghost knife with some very large severums, blood parrots, jack dempseys and oscars and not only does he do well, but he thrives. he's right up in there grabbing food with all the cichlids, squeezing between them, and grabbing all he can. The cichlids don't really acknowledge him at all.

Now, that is my tank. Just because I have success, doesn't mean you will. part of the reason why I may have had success is because all these fish grew up together. Putting anything besides cichlids in with cichlids is always a risk.

Brown Knives are probably the most peaceful of the Notopteridae family. It can work, but I wouldn't trust the Convict.

I would say everyone raised from small yes. would i add one to med sized fish no. i have a 5" one in my 125g with my two 9" oscars green terror firemltuh jags jds and more and he is aboslutly fine and not a single nip. but ive actually tried to add clown knives his size or bigger and they get creamed. he grew up with all my guys from the time they were 2n so i think this helps. i would add one to an establsihed tank of medium sized cichlids.
