hey guys i went to my local fish store and a buddy of mine owns to store and he just got a shipment of African butterfly fish
and he gave me a deal and gave me one for $6!! its in a 15 gallon right now( he is about 2.5 inches) and i'm gonna put it in my 40 when its done seeding. I was gonna put central american cichlids in there but idk if there compatible of not :nilly: ,so if there are any compatible cichlids can some one tell me some i can keep with my butterfly.

I wouldn't put the butterfly fish with any central americans. Once the cichlids got bigger, the butterfly would be picked on and isn't equipped to flee or hide. Better off to keep one or the other. Rams may work, but they are south american.

Only the smallest centrals will work in a 40, maybe just a pair rainbow cichlids, the more docile smaller Thorichthys, or some of the newer Amatitlania types. They may be OK with the butterfly because the cichlids stay near the substrate and the butterfly stays on the surface.

I have 4 of them with my Jacks, Green terror, Frontosa, 5 peacocks, 12 lelupi, claw frogs, and several others in my 180. No one even looks at the African Butterfly's. Mixes can work. Mine works fine
