African butterfly fish and sa cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't keep them with anything remotely aggressive. They're slow, and have long fins. Really cool predators though.

depends on which SA cichlids...could work with apistos, rams, and some of the more placid and/or smaller geos and acaras.

If ur looking for experience then yes a butterfly would be fine with those fish. i keep mine with a baby gt and gymno geos and other small cichlids and they dont mind him at all. my butterfly is intact and not missing anything lol they really dont pay attention to it at all. something i would recommend though is floating plants. i have some floating parrot feather (its a plant duh) and he likes hanging out in it waiting for prey. and dont worry that the cichlids wont let them eat trust me they are vigourous eaters and they dont care whos in the way. mine jumps like mad at feeding time.

One other important thing to remember about African Butterfly fish is they do not like current. And the jewel cichlid you mentioned is a very aggressive cichlid (from my experience) so if you decide to try just watch out for it. In fishkeeping, there usually are no absolutes. What works in my tank may not work in yours and vice versa. You can always try it out but it would be a good idea to have a back up plan in case things don't work out. Good luck to you and let us know how it turns out.
