i've aquired on of these from a friend whose closing his tanks down , what do they get classed as and how do i care for it , at the mo it seems happy eating tetra prima which is what all my fish eat

AFB's love live food, especially insects. They will also eat small fish such as feeder guppies. These two items are their main food in the wild. Using non-live food doesn't allow you to witness the AFB's predatory nature. They don't have a gigantic mouth for nothing :)

Also make sure their are no openings in the top of the tank as these fish are notorious for jumping out of tanks.

They will usually feed on anything that is on the surface of the water. If they accept it, I'd use frozen and freeze dried krill and foods like that, along with high quality floating pellets. I would avoid store bought feeders, obviously. Although feeding them crickets is pretty entertaining to watch.

Their scientific name is Pantadon Buchholzi. I feed mine crickets, floating cichlid pellets, freeze-dried shrimp, and sometimes insects I find outside.
Did you only get one butterfly fish? If so, keep an eye out for more of them! They aren't as active when there aren't other butterflies.
Good luck with it! They're a lot of fun!

i only had the one cause thats all he had, hes giving up fish as a hobby, at the mo its only about 1-1/12 inches, so i suppose my next question is, hoe big do they get

about 4"

This is really true. This happened to me today and I lost him. I was really mad at myself for forgetting to shut the top.

Yeah, one of my butterflies jumped out a few days ago. Fortunately, he wasn't out for long! He's fine now and back to being a pig like the other ones.
