I just noticed this today his eyes have always seemed a little buggy since I got him but idk what this or what I should do please help. I don't want it to spread to other fish if it's contagious.

I caught him today behind the big eye was all red and his gut was bloated I know it's not from food because he hasn't been eating. He was hanging out in the corners up at the top. I assumed it was parasite or something he's never been right since my brother dropped him off about 2 weeks ago. I put him in a bag of ice with cold water and hit him in the head with a hammer to put him down was quick I feel bad but I feel he was to far gone. Question now is none of my other fish are showing signs of any problems what should I do to my tank? Big water change and keep an eye on it?

That's what I would do, just keep an eye on it. IIRC popeye is caused either by bad water quality or an opportunistic infection that makes fluid build up in there. Did he come from a bad tank maybe?

If you are worried about bloat and the other fish are still eating it might be worth it to soak their food in the epsom salt solution in the hexamita thread. if they don't have anything it will just act as a laxative but if they do that should kill the parasites. Vacuum really well after.

Also sorry about you having to kill your fish, I hate having to do that but sometimes there's nothing else you can do.

none of my other fish show any signs of any problems I change 20% of water twice a week and then a good 50% every couple weeks on top my parameters were all fine. I vacuumed the entire tank cleaned under everything hopefully it doesn't spread. Yea it sucked I felt so bad when I was netting him knowing what was coming. All my Africans get nls pellets and algae wafers with sipirulina and brine shrimp and bloodworms on occasions.
