I have a 300 gallon african tank. I have lately been interested in getting a couple of eels. Wondering what type (if any) would work with cichlids.

there are spiny eels from lake tanganyika that are readily available. some with very nice patterns.

since you are from san diego, check out petkingdom. they have one in their little cichlid show tank. i saw some little shellies in there that the eel did not bother.

Hey, I keep spiny eels in with my cichlids. I have one fire eel, one peacock ell, one other eel. They are awesome but these eels can get big so becareful. Sometimes they will get some baby cichlids when the parents are not looking:nilly:

How would you feed one in this enviroment. My cichlids act like hungry ethiopeans and eat anything as soon as it hits the water. I have read that you need to feed eels black worms, ect. and I know my fish would never let a treat like this sink to the bottom. I have seen pictures where people feed their eels with a little pole? I don't have time for a special needs fish like this, and if thats what I will end up getting into, then I think I should probly stay away.

You could use a pair of forceps to get food to bottom. Or, since your tank is huge, try feeding the cichlids at the opposite end of the tank from the eel's hideout. If your cichlids are pushy enough, it might not work, but it's worth a try.

Those poles are pretty much just a plastic stick commonly used to feed bottom dwelling fish in deep tanks. They put shrimp, meat, anything that the fish will eat and stay on the stick, then the eel will eat it off the stick. After the eel gets some practice ( say 2-3 weeks) he'll probably come up to the top for food.

Shouldn't be a problem, my fire eel sticks his nose a couple of inches out of the water to take shrimp from my fingers. :D
