About how many African cichlids could I fit in a 55 gallon

it all depends on your filtration/tank style/type of african you want to keep.
most of the ones u will find are mbuna and for a 55 id say 10-14 is good, but again this will depend on your filtration

i have ehiem canister rated for 80 gallons and a Top fin hang over filter (60 gallons) that came with the tank
ok do a bit more research on the fish u want. I have mixed different types but it is normally not recommended.
Most Haps get huge. Mbuna are the ones that stay around 4 inches. Peacocks dont get very big, but I dont suggest putting them with Mbuna. I suggest about 15 mbuna in a 55 gallon. Make sure to have lots of rocks.
