Does anyone no any good sand for african cichlids that is relatively cheap? i would love to get some cool looking sand for my 55... Or any Other substrate that would look fairly decent.:D

i've used both playground sand and pool filter sand and i can't tell the difference in either cleanliness or appearance. playground sand is cheaper and easier to find, lowes sells it for $5 for 50 pounds.

in my experience both are pretty dirty and take a lot of effort to clean prior to placing in the tank.

pool filter sand might look a tad better in the tank but not much.

you can go the pool filter sand way, but crushed coral looks wayyy better in my opinion for 40$ your 55 will be coveres with crused coral or for 16$ the pool filter sand, spend the extra 20 or soo $$ and you'll be happy you did:)

for a 55, 50 pounds of pool filter sand would be fine, so you are looking at $9.

crushed coral or argonite will cost you at least quadruple that, unless i am just looking in the wrong places.

Pool filter sand should be fairly clean. If it is not you have bought the wrong kind. Leslie's pool filter sand is the best. Add some trumpet snails and it will look even more like crushed coral

pretty sure that is the brand i bought. got it from the pool shop. supposedly it was #20 silica, just like i have read is the kind to get.

it took me just as long to clean it as it does the playground sand from lowes.

i've read similar experiences on cichlid-forum forums.
