For africans, go with vegi based flakes. Always had the best luck with them. Wether its sprulina flakes or whatever

Although a generalized pellet works for just about every cichlid, you sometimes need to be more specific.
Mbuna and Tropheus are primarily vegetarian, but while grazing pick up crustaceans and other animal protein foods. In this case a spiraling based pellet is best.
Some rift lake Africans are piscivores, or scale eaters and need a higher protein diet.
Some are planktivores, Fossorochromis are eartheaters in the same vein as Geophagines.
Buttikoferi eat hippo dung as it is excreted. Some cichlids ram the sides of egg or fry carrying females to get them to spit out the eggs or fry in order to eat them.

OK then, more to the point
I feed my vegetarian cichlids Algaemax, and leafy greens, like dandelions

insectivores a generalized pellets and things like mosquito larvae and gammarus shrimp

and total carnivores and piscivores, Algaemax, trout pellets earthworms, and other large terrestrial insects
