Has anyone experimented with those new African Fan Shrimp that's just recently popped up in the market? Some shops have named them Cameroon Shrimp or Armoured Shrimp, dunno what's the real name.

The big ones sell for $15 at the regular stores but i found a cheaper alternative at the farmway, about $3 to $5 for a small or medium one.

Seems they really need a lot of care before introducing them into the tank, found that out the hard way... Sigh. They're really neat, have strong legs and no pincers but fans instead with which they use to filter out stuff in the water. Its really nice to watch them (at the lfs) doing what they do all in a line, facing the filter's outflow.

Here's a pic nicked off the net...

Am trying again to get them into my planted tank which has grown to house 7 Black Mollies, 2 young common plecos, 1 baby goldfish and an infestation of baby black mollies (20++) They're all pretty peaceful and may be a good environment for the shrimp. Tell me what you think, am open to suggestions but won't buy them if i feel i can't provide the proper environment for them.

I have them and also the Asian version, a.k.a Bamboo Shrimp. The Asians are out and about all the time and clean the gravel better than Corys. The Africans hide in the Driftwood and never come out. I have mine in a 300 gallon planted tanks with Apistos, Rams, Corys, Pearl Gouramis, Cardinals, Lemon Tetras, Bristlenose, Rainbows, Ottos and a hundred Amano Shrimp. They eat crushed flake and the like strong currents. They also prefer slightly acidic water. Easy to keep. I've had mine for 2 1/2 years.

Atya gabonensis, also called vampire shrimp, getting more common. Fairly easy to keep but like shadowed nooks to poke out of. For a treat feed them small brine shrimp, I have heard they will eat small fry as well. They are reported to require brackish water to successfully breed, or at least for the eggs to hatch. Cool shrimp. Here is a link for a profile. http://www.petshrimp.com/africanfiltershrimp.html

Anyone know of a website I can get the African Fan Shrimp from? I know liveaquaria.com used to sell them, but for $70... EEK! I have one, I bought him for $10... really want another one but I cant find them anywhere :(

I have five that Ive kept for over a year now and they are all right out in front of the tank hanging on plants and feeding. I've not found then to be very demanding and keep them with many other fish and shrimp. eg- white cloud, bee goby, cherry shrimp, bristle nose, SAE, hillstream loach, corys
