im looking at critters for my 5 gallon and I really seem to like the look of the African fat tailed gecko. I will go no bigger than 5 gallons and need to see if I could fit it i here comfortably.would I be able to feed it freeze dried or dead crickets or alike?
I am open to other lizards and gecko options!

A 5 gallon is really small. Any reason you won’t go bigger?

I would eventually, it’s just I have a empty 5 gallon lying around. I have a plastic tub which is quite wide, and am looking for upgrades already. Could I be able to start off with a 5gallon though?

I’ve never kept geckos, so maybe someone with experience can chime in.

I’ve just never seen any for sale that could be housed in a 5g, not even for a month or two.
If you have other projects going on why not wait? Then you can pin point exactly what kinda critter you want, learn all about it, and be prepared before going out and getting it. I know it’s not a “fun” option, but you and your new critter would be better off:)

I have seen some people who do house then in 5 gallons, all though it would only be for a short period of time

What are the dimensions of the plastic bin? That may be a better idea. I use to raise hatchlings in bins with the footprint of a 5 gallon, but I wouldn't recommend it as a stand alone tank. As with aquariums, temps can swing drastically in smaller tanks, and it doesn't provide much of a temp gradient.

I would say too small for the 5 gallon, I own 2 adult leopard geckos in a 15 gallon. And it seems fattails get similar size. My opinion is 10 gallon minimum for 1 African fat tail gecko, if the plastic bin has the footprint of a standard 10 gallon or bigger. Then I'll say ok if the bin is an appropriate size for the gecko.

Hope you have a cover cause my geckos like to climb. And my help may not be enough since I never owned African fat tail geckos.
