I just bought mine a few days ago. The store had two 7 inchers and I just couldn't help it. I put it in my tank. Its very active and likes to hang out with the bichirs. I was just wondering if I should be concerned about it targeting their slimecoat. My current stock in my 300 gallon aquarium is:

1 x 18" Endlicheri Bichir
1 x 14" Endlicheri Bichir
1 x 15" Ornate Bichir
1 x 13" Ornate Bichir
1 x 6" Red-Tail Shark
5 x Adult Silver Dollars (Regular)
5 x 6"-8" Clown Loaches
1 x 7" African Featherfin Catfish
2 x 9"-10" inch Bala Sharks (growing out 3 more in a 55 gallon to add to this group)
2 x 6"-9" Gold Severums (one is 6 inches and the other 9)
6 x 6" Filament Barbs (These are adults)

I am growing out a datnoid, clown knife and leopard ctenopoma to add to this stocking along with the three small bala sharks.

So far, I have no problems in my tank.

They have been reported to get rogue and do the rasping you are talking about but it appears rather rare from my reading around. I've kept 1-5 over the years with hundreds of tank mates and mine have never done this.

I can dig up a thread or a few where the problems have been reported.

i had one in my tank with bichirs for years. my congi actually tried to bite it but the catfish brushed it off like nothing.

I'd be very cautious and keep an eye out. I had 3 in a tank and when I added 2 neoarius graeffei that were much larger then the synos and all 3 of the synos targeted their slime coat and one died within 2 days even after I moved the synos out after less then 24 hours.
