I was at a LFS when I came across a single African in a tank. I thought he/she was pretty so I picked it up. I'd like an ID though, because this is the first fish I'm putting in the tank and I want to make sure everyone that I put in after him will be compatible. Sorry if this is totally easy, but I'm a noob when it comes to Africans, haha. Thanks!

it looks like a male auratus cichlid. it looks just like my male.

Agreed with Melanochromis auratus. How big is your tank?
Most Melanochromis sp. are highly aggressive and won't really fit to achieve that tank compatibility you desire, especially if it is a smaller tank.
If you plan on trying to establish a reasonably peaceful Malawi type community I would recommend introducing several fish at once, not one after the other as new fish are easily picked on by established residents.

i lovvvvvvvvvvvve!! these guys! keep him! :D
