i was at a LFS today and they had these 12" african knife fish(thats what was written on the tank) they were like giant black ghost knife but brownish and had some other colors.anyway there tails where white like something was eating away at the end of the tail.i want to get one but not sure if this can be fixed.anyone know what it may be and how to cure it?

Those fish usually are not expensive. How much are they selling for? I am not sure the disease they have, but 12" is a very decent size for an African Knifefish... that alone should show some level of fitness. Ask the owner of the store too. Ask for a discount or something.
i would hold off. there are other avenues to find this fish healthy. even the big chain stores sell these fish. its not worth buying only to stress out trying to save him. it could be ick, fin rot, scars from attacks...... plus if it is 12'' thats pretty big for a knife. it may not live long, so i would suggest buying one smaller and healthier
It is probably an afer knife fish, they have a little bit of a white tip to the tail. When it swam did its entire body move. (eel like) or did just the bottom feather fin move like a clown knife? If the entire body moved its a papy afer and they get quite large and are pretty mean. $12 is kind of cheap for one of those though, so it could just be a regular brown knife. Afer are $30 around here.
