thinking about getting some ive heard that when young thay do good in groups but when older thay fight i wanted to get some for a 55 gallon and was wondering how many to get? and when thay can eat other fish and how big of fish thay can eat

There are 2 types of knife fish that are usually sold. The most commonly sold "African" knife fish is Xenomystus Nigri (African Brown Knife). They only grow to an average of 8" They are the most peaceful out of the commonly sold knife fish. I would just go with one for a 55g. They are very cool fish. Give them plenty of hiding places and they may be more comfortable out in the open at that point.
ya i heard of the two types i was talking about the african type but the other type apteronotus leptorhynchus i think. what can you tell me about them?
Xenomystus Nigri is from West Africa. It can easily adjust to most water parameters. They are peaceful and the smallest of the common knife species that you would find in the trade. They average 8" but have been known to reach 12" They are territorial and that's why it's best to house one especially in a 55g. They are very secretive and like to hide. They are noctural and will come out while the lights are off. They can be predatory so be careful of tank mates.
Apteronotus Leptorhynchus is actually a South American Knife fish that is similar to the Black Ghost Knife. They too are territorial and will be aggressive with other knife fish. They are also predatory. More so than X. Nigri.

more preditory then african cool thats what i was looking for do you know if thay cant see very well like the black ghost and if thay need to hide like the black ghost also and do you know if one could live in a 55 i know the black ghost cant
Sometimes I think that it's just another color morph of a BGK. They seem to be almost identical when it comes to care. I think the Brown Ghost Knife is a bit smaller than the BGK. I think they grow to 10" so a 55g should be fine.
ive seen them once and they looked like black ghosts without the wight tail but if it only gets 10'' then i might be the one i will get, i liked the black ghost but they get to big for the tank i wanted it to go in so the south american brown knife will probly be perfect.
