what is the min tanks size for an african knife? one source I read said 30 another 25 and another ten. ten can't possibly be correct because the thing gets 12 inches. I appreciate any feed back. Thanks in advance.
imo a 40 breeder would be a nice size. I usually go the fishs length... 12"... so a min 18" deep tank... and then 3' long... height imo not as important and standard sized tanks don't really go to shallow imo.. so footprint is important. ( takeing the fishs adult size adding .5 a length.. then tripleinging the fish's length is a better geenral rule imo then the standard 1" per gallon rule, particularly with anything getting over 6" ) add to that ABK's are social... I'de say a min would be a 40 for 3... and then imo they'de be better off in a 75. Of course you can keep one in a 20H for a few monthes just fine... but eventually you'll need to upgrade unless you end up with one on the small side and only keep a single fish.
African Brown Knifes average 8" and depending on how some people feel, 29g-55g would be the tank sizes you would be looking at. Personally, I think a standard 29g is perfectly fine for these guys as long as you are just keeping one.
I'd definitely agree with Ben, I've never seen one above 8" and a lot stay even smaller than that. I also think that a 29g would be fine for one, but they do like to be in groups, so if at all possible I would go with a 40g-55g and get a few knifefish.
