African Leaf Fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Are these guys related to leopard ctenopoma or Datnoides at all? They seem so similar. I've read about these guys but have never seen any LFS with them. they look so cool

As similar as they look, they're unrelated, but they are related to Nandis nandis and I think the South American Leaf fish (Monocirrhus polyacanthus). Very small fish, probably not much more than an inch in length, making it even more fun to watch track down small prey in the tank.

Are they ambush predators? These guys look really cool and I didn't realize how small they were.

Yes they are, but they seem to have a hard time sitting still lol, the largest often rushes the prey after waiting for a short period of time in hopes that it comes closer to him. When he has no luck, he quickly rushes in for the meal.

They seem awesome lol. Are they only good in species only?

Probably best in a species only, however they are currently with two different species of Geophagus Cichlid (watching them before adding to the main 55-Gallon to make sure they are eating) without any issues so far.

Both were out looking for food - thought I'd snap a few more shots. You can see the Geo's in a few of them - Red Hump and two Red Tops which I got from an auction. Those two still look kinda iffy, but we'll see what the days bring us. Otherwise the Leaf fish seem happy and healthy!:D
