I am trying to plan ahead here. Fortunately we are in a place that only has sun from 8:30AM till 5PM during the cold months and algae isn't an issue yet for our tank, but it will be soon. We have an african Mbuna setup with 9 P. Demasoni, and 2 labs in a 65 gallon. The tank sits on a plant ledge that can be looked onto from our living room and back enty. The Living room window has blinds so it is not an issue but the back hall has a door that is all glass, that doesn't lend itself to blinds and a window in the hall that is long and short, definitely not made for window coverings. The hall window will see little to no sun because is looks into another house that is about 15 feet away. However the sun shines directly into our back door later in the day. Come summer time that will be a huge issue. If this sunny beautiful weather continues it may become a larger issue noww for algae growth.

After all that story, what we are looking for is a good Algae eating fish. My wife is sad about plecos because she thinks they are ugly (I think they are pretty cool), but would would be ideal. The foot print is (estimating here) 36X18X24 or something similar to that.

Thanks again for the help!

The synodontis species like the synodontis petricola and synodontis eupterus go great with africans. But they won't be as good of an algae eater as plecos would be.

I forgot to mention if you choose to go with plecos, they can be a hit or miss...it may work out with your africans and it may not. I've heard bristlenose plecos work out well in african cichlid tanks, but I doubt your wife will like the looks of them...lol

ive got bristlenose and albino bristlenose plecos in all of my 17 african tanks.. if you get them at over 2" they do fine with mbuna or whatever.. i mean one might die here or there.. but they generaly do fine and are the best algae eaters in my opinion

are you set on getting a pleco? you might consider a couple chinese algae eaters. IMO they do a better job at eating algae than pleco's. I have a couple in my mixed Malawi tank and they do a great job...
