Bonjour everyone,

I plan on going in a different direction with my 55 gallon, what are some good African riverine oddballs? I really like the idea of spiny eels, cichlids, and dithers. I like Kribensis Cichlids - maybe a pair. African spiny eels are cool - nothing over 12” though. Dithers could be some kind of barb or killifish. What do you think?

Check into Malawi spiny eel. Very pretty and about 8 inches.
African striped barb looks good.
Krib pair go full convict in reproductive rate, so they can act as dithers (just watch for aggression).
I think the eel, a krib pair, and a shoal of barbs would be good. Maybe an African butterfly.

African red eye tetra, congo tetras, nanochromis splendens or transvestites, buffalo head cichlid, ocellated spiney eel starry night eel, african brown knife. I would caution you on eels and some of the other inhabitants as eels may eat the smaller fish.

twentyleagues twentyleagues ,

I like the dwarf cichlids. Red eye tetras are hard to find and expensive. Congo’s are expensive, and I am NOT getting any more because of my relationship with them. And the African Striped Barbs are cool. I like the Ocellated Eel. I guess the African Barbs may get eaten by a larger eel, so that may need work.
