I am considering stocking ideas for the 75 gallon I am probably going to buy.

I had thought about getting a texas cichlid or other large CA cichlid, but I think various polypterids and ctenompomas would be really cool. Are any of the ctenopoma species really nasty, or are they pretty mellow? Leopard ctens are the only ones I have seen, but I haven't looked anywhere but petsmart. Are other species fairly common?

Also, which polypterus species could I get? I have seen sens, obviously, as well as delhezi. What else won't get too big?

I'll probably think of more questions later.

thanks

stock up on dels, senegals, and palmas

Cool that was fast. About how much would I probably spend on juvies? I saw a del at a LFS for $40, it was probably 6-8 inches. I'm pretty sure it was actually a sen, though. In fact I distinctly remember some guy with his girlfriend pointing to it and saying "thats not a delheeeeezi" with serious emphasis on the heee part.

And about how many individuals in the tank?

I already asked in the poly section, but would an ornate fit?

Going to be doing a similar thing with my new 75 gallon tank. Moving over 2 senegal bichir, 2 ropefish, and 3 african butterflyfish. Hope to get delhezi and palmas bichirs, ctenopoma, and elephant nose as well.

Oh and I have a school of 7 congo tetras for it as well.

Do the african butterflies do anything interesting? I had forgotten about those. I also thought about a brown knife.

the african butterflies are cool fish, but mostly due to their appearance, they are not particularly active

Which species of ctenopoma would be best? Or are they all compatible?

These are the three Ctenopoma species that Anne from the Polypterus forum posted in a list of compatible fish for smaller bichir.

Ctenopoma acutirostre

Ctenopoma oxyrhynchus

Ctenopoma kingsleyae

Oh good. Those are ones I want.

Reminds me of this guy that came into the shop where I work talking about his puhCOOS (pacus)
