So my friend is looking into getting African Pike and asked me for some help on deciding out his tank mates. We've done some research and this fish seems to quite the predator. Myself keeping Central American Cichlids I was under the impression mean fish with mean fish. However perusing the internet I've found the following comment.
Good candidates include large Tinfoil barbs, Polypterus, Synodontis sp. and other large characins, basically most large, non-aggressive fish.
But I was curious if anyone here had keeping this species or a similar species and what sort of fish they used as tank-mates. It seems that there go well with fish that are:
a) not aggressive?
b) too big to be considered food.
c)
pH of 7.0-7.5, temperature 76-79F, GH 8-18 - this is not a fussy fish as far as water chemistry is concerned.

Any and all help would greatly be appreciated.

Seems like you have the right info....non aggressive fish and also fish that dont look like them are good also fish that wont be considered food...arowanas dont do good with these unless the aro is way bigger. Mine killed a same size jar and silver in less then 5 minutes...Tankmates they did get along with were pbass, frontosas, dats, polys, juruense catfish, jags, etc. Hope this helps...

I would avoid other characins and similar looking fish. Mine did fine with a bunch of geos, polys and catfish but showed aggression towards other characins (tinfoilds, balas and aces). It was also initially fine with my clown loaches but eventually outgrew them so fast that it started to try to eat them.

They're awesome fish - one of my favorites. Surprisingly personable for a characin.
