I want to start an african tank, but not with cichlids. Right now im looking for a 55+ gal long, possibly bigger if i can find one cheap. I want it to be a planted tank and it must house my two baby senegals and a small african butterfly. I was thinking about elephant noses maybe, but ive heard they can be tricky. I want to get maybe one or two, but i read they're territorial and should have only one to a tank, or that they're social and need at least a few. What are some other oddball fish choices? is a possible elephant nose a bad idea?

african knife gets 12" will be fine in that tank.
if you isntall a blue light (like marine tanks) and have that on he will come out. otherwise they tend to shy away in the day.
also you should try Congo Tetras they get 4"+ are colourfull and within the african species of fish.

with elephant noses you only have one, or many. your tank cant support a group of 8 or so so go with one and leave it a ledge or hideaway for it to go when it feels threatened. some floating plants will help to make them come out more too.
african butterfly fish and bichirs also see floating plants as a detterent to jumping.

I really like those african glass cats. but they seem hard to find.
and they're quite fragile too :(

I had a 50g with 12 Congo Tetras, 3 Ctenopoma, 2 Senegal Bichirs, and an African Brown Knife.
