what a begginer african im starting them and i kept sa/ca now im doing african so what would be best fish to start with min. tank and i want them to breed. i have a 10 galon right now getting a 30-46 gallon in november so any ideas till then.
for a beginner Id reccomend a 55g tank and mbuna.there are some cool tangs you can put in a 10g but theyre more difficult.in a 55g you could have 2 groups with a male and 3-5 females in each group.decide on the colors you like then folks can reccomend fish
It is hard to imagine Africans in a 10g. You may need to step up. Mbuna may be the best with smaller tanks. Haps, peacocks and the other deep water guys may require more room.
ok to start im getting a 46 g bowfront in november so when i get tank wht should i have so i can breed in there? i like colorful fish any blue, red, yellow, green, not black or white i there too plain so any begginer breeding africans. thx for help so far.
Frontosa are best in groups and in nothing less than a 6 foot tank. A 10 gallon tank is unsuitable for frontosa at any size.
Moving on... your 46 bow is a bit on the small side, footprint wise, to house most mbuna or at least more than one or two species of them. Have a look at Pseudotropheus saulosi as a single species tank. Another popular option is a group of 12 to 15 Pseudotropheus demasoni and 5 or 6 Labidochromis caeruleus. This combination gives a lot of colour and activity to a smaller tank.
Keep your ten gallon as a quarantine/hospital/fry tank.
Wait till you buy the 46gal tank before buying any Malawi's. I would advise you rather look at getting 4-5 species with a Male and 2 Females of each. This will fit into the tank quite easily. I run 3ft tanks with between 6-10 species and breed quite successfully. An overcrowded tank results in subdued aggression being shown by any male. Place enough rocks in the tank to create enough caves for the fish. Mbuna are rock dwellers and therefore need plenty of rocks. I prefer a pile at each end as my experience has taught me that a single reef like structure results in the most dominant male trying to control the tank. I also use a sand/fine coral medium as this results in a far cleaner tank. Regular 20% water changes, weekly, are advisable.
Plant some valsineria for some greenery.
My avatar is a pic of one of my 6 tanks.
I started out with my aficans in a 30 gal. It was a really bad idea. I had to upgrade really quickly. The fish grew so fast, and there were some serious aggression problems. I just couldn't see putting any african in a 10 gal. tank. It would be like sending someone to prision just for being born.
