What dimension is the most important for these fish? Not really interested in Gatf, but the smaller guys... Tanzies in particular.

I have mostly ray tanks - big footprints rather short heights. Would I be better off with something catered more towards these fish? IF so what would more "ideal" dimensions be?

Thoughts on 8x2x4 high????Would this be wide enough with only a 2' width?

Would love to hear from you experienced ATF keepers......

Thanks in advance.

For life? I'd rather have the 8x4 footprint with the 2' height. Im convinced that footprint is more important than height for these guys. IMO, the ideal tank would have a ray tank like proportions. There's no reason to believe that your tanzies won't approach two feet long. For the mid term, that tank would be wonderful.

My thought process is that just before I sold Max (I know he's a gatf, but he's my largest tiger), he was 13" in an 18" wide tank. He had such a hard time turning around that it made him have trouble feeding.

After having kept all five species, I've seen no difference in the overall bodily flexibility in the different species so I am forced to believe that an 18"+ tatf would probably have issues turning in that tank.

I'd have to think that height is the least important dimension. If they move quickly you want to have enough length and width.

Agreed height is least important. They do like it though.
My gatf perked up a lot going from 2' height to 2.5', uses the entire swimming area

To house any species of ATF for life... the min. dimensions should be 10 x 4 x 4. I have a group/pack of VATF's in a tall(6 ft high) grow out tank and they swim in the mid and top sections of the tank most of the time. If I had to pick the least important dimension, I would say that width is the least important. In fact, when width is limited the 'accidents' (head banging) deceases.

Why not just go with Olympic size swimming pool for these fish that might hit 2'? lol
