African Tiger Fish tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If the tank is big enough you can keep him with anything too big to eat.
Some speciemen can be agressive to fish that look similar to them!

I have seen pictures of tanks that has ATF with tankmates....
How is their tankmate policy ? All bigger fish ok or just some? or is it always risky?

I have a 7" Vittatus and was wondering if tankmates were possible.

With a 7" VATF, as long as the tankmate is not smaller than half the size of the VATF and the tankmate is not a killer aggressor (example Jar).

I had 2 VATFs that were 5-6" with a 4" motoro, 8" Gar, some Plecos, 2 Mono Sabae (6" height), and a 7" goldfish. They never bothered anyone except each other. They seem to have hated their own kind:screwy:
I do hear that once they hit close to 10" they become aggressive towards everyone (though, I dont know cause I sold them a while ago).

If you are trying to get some tankmates for life with your VATF, get something that grows about the same speed and try to get something that does not swim mid level with the VATf. They like bottom dwellers more than top dwellers. JMO
Also give them a lot of current, they thrive on it:headbang2

as long as the tankmates dont look like him.
and generally fast tankmates would scare the crap outta him.
also, when keeping several together, there should be at least 6 individuals.

I've read if afrowanas being nippy I believe, wouldn't recommend it. As mentioned bottom dwellers would be best, like catfish, wolves (depending in specimen), oddballs like
Gobies maybe, loaches possibly. If you want mid swimmers, best bet would probably be brycron, they'd be the toughest you'll find most likely, if not that you can try barbs or SD, but the vatf can become nippy, as mentioned they do get a little solitary as they grow, might've chose the wrong word, once larger they stick together but in loose packs, not tight like juveniles.

My GATF is about 10.5 inches now. I have it housed with 2 masheers, 1 afro, 1 silver, 1 gar, and a bunch of bottom dwellers for me this combination is working. It took a few weeks for it to not be spooked by the masheers at feeding as it is a very timid eater. Now it schools with them and eats easily.

Tank mates i have had to get rid of before this combination armatus because if it got territorial and would stress the Gatf alot or even bite it, a group of 3 kelberi same issues they would chase the GATF although i believe 1 bass would be fine as they are not as aggresive alone.
