Hay everyone. I have a question for you all experts. I have 4 african tiger fish 2 arethe vittatus and the other 2 are the goliath. I got them for free from my friend. Luck huh :headbang2 . Well i know they get big and need a big tank. But how fast do they grow. how do you tell the females from males, has anyone breed them in a tank yet. prob not. Anyway I dont know very much at all about them. So if you can help me out. Oh and whats the rumor about them not going to be sold anymore as of 2006. :swear:

I had 4 and grew them on for a friend in the trade they grew very quickly had then in a 5 x2x2 got them at about 4 inches and had them about a 8-9 months they were about 12inches even got them eating white bate got them of live food found them quite easy to keep just needed a bigger tank in the end as very fast and 2 of them had damaged there faces through hitting the end of the tank have a look at this site not a lot of info but might help http://www.****************/catalog_pages/wild/hydrocynus.htm

as for breading in a tank I would be really surprised as they get huge and apparently can live for 8 years I do know they need really good filtration as the idiot that bought one of them had pore water and the gill covers on the fish ended up folding back looked awful

Post pics. Having goliaths are very very rare. Even if they turn out not to be goliaths at least we will be able to tell you what sp it is.

ya that will be a good idea i want to know if they really are goliath or not. i will put some pic on. but what is a way you can tell the difference

I had this problem and after a lot of research I found this out this is all information nicked from other sites and cobble together good luck cos there is so much confusion over it all "Scales on lateral line: 44-48 for vittatus"The tail being more broad on Goliath However, on Goliath there isn't any yellow on the upper lobe so I am told????tooth count (14 on the lower jaw and 18 teeth on the upper jaw), Good luck with that one have a look at this site

Lateral line
Goliath- 53-58
lateral stripes of golaith are the least distinctive but got to have them next to each other as i say all nicked off of other sites but i struggled to fined this my self hope it helps sent me mad trying to count teath and scales just be happy to have tigers no matter what they are  I was gutted when i got rid of mine just didnt have room for bigger tank at the time

I had the same situation. My ATFs started showing facial damage from ramming the end of the tank. After one lost a front tooth I decided to put them in something to lessen further damage. I put them in a 650gal circular polyethylene bin. The opaque curved walls stopped all the ramming. I had a 24"x24" lexan window installed in the tank when I bought it so I could view the fish from the side instead of just the top. The whole setup ran less than $700 delivered from aquaticeco.com.

The pic shows one of these bins with the smaller window installed (not 24"x24").
