im not a very experienced fish enthusiest yet. but i want to know (from both sides) what are seperate and different characteristics between african and SA/CA cichlid tanks. beyond the obvious i.e. SA/CA tend to be larger (GT JD midas texas etc etc. more aggresive sometimes, less can be kept in certain tanks (due to size). or the obvious African characteristics such as4 to 5 to 6 in. fish (except fronts) more can be kept in tanks due to smaller size.
so what are some differences other than those i stated if there are more.

oh and also i have a 55 gallon tank im starting. thats why i am asking mostly.
just lemme know what you think.
thanks

if ur starting a 55 you'll be able to have a lot more variety with africans, as you stated they tend to stay smaller, also have brighter colors and need a higher PH to truly thrive. Overstocking and overfiltration are both good things to do with africans as the fewer you have the more likely they are to fight each other. Also factor in the need for a lot of rockwork/caves.

south americans are my personal preference as they tend to at least in my experience be more personable fish. they do get larger so in a 55 your choices will be limited quite a bit, but there are still lots of cool SA cichlids that could work for you, convicts, firemouths, a JD, etc - definitely do all your research

Well first, it should be pointed out CA and SA cichlids are very different fish. SAs as a whole tend to be a lot more peaceful (with a few notable exceptions) and tend to prefer soft acidic water (not a huge concern unless you're raising certain extreme wild caught fish as most will adjust fine to your tap water). SA range in size from big severums to tiny dwarf cichlids like apistogramma. Other popular groups are acaras, earth eaters and technically angelfish and discus are SA cichlids as well (as are cichla and crenicichla, AKA peacock bass and pike cichlids, a whole other topic ;)).

CA cichlids as a whole tend to be more aggressive and prefer a higher ph/kh. They also range in size from massive like dovii to small like convicts, with everything in between. Some of the most common CAs you see (this is one of only times you will see me use common names ;)) are jaguars, Midas/red devils, firemouths, green terrors and jack dempseys.

Then you have the Africans, which vary widely depending on where in Africa they come from--rift lakes, rivers, etc. The rift lake variety are the most commonly seen and many common ones are very colorful and can be kept in large numbers (which is actually recommended in their case to spread out aggression). These prefer a high ph/kh.

I could go on and on but as you can see there are a wide variety of cichlids from different parts of the world. It comes down to what you want/like in a tank. I'm a CA guy myself, but appreciate them all. I like the intelligence, aggression and relative ease of care and breeding (depending on species of course!) of CA cichlids. You will find die hard fans of any groups of the fish I mentioned and they all have a reason behind it. Look at pictures online and describe what you would like behaviorally from your fish and I'm sure MFK can point you in the right direction. :)

Water chemistry and demands. I also think they have better color. But what I like the most in C/A is there personalities.

Most Africans are not very interactive, while most CA/SA are highly interactive. I'm sure someone will point out a few africans who are interactive, but they are the exception. If you want to have the tank a showpiece with flashy colors africans are nice, I never saw mine as anything more.
Still have good options for either in a 55.
If you want more interactive fish CA/SA is the way to go. There are a lot of CA/SA that fall into the flashy showpiece tank category too and you get more interaction. 55 still gives you a lot of options in SA/CA, just depends what you are looking for.
