What do you think when people mix fish from the two origins and do you think it makes your aquarium less of a show tank if you mix the cichlids from two parts of the world. Idk personally I think it looks crappy when people do it, I just wanted to find out if other people think the same way to. The way I see it is there is certain buffers for acidity for certain species that make there color and health better. Let me know what you think I've always wanted to know what others think?

I think its hard to keep a true biotope unless you were that picky about it...

Most people who have community tanks possibly like a see different fish, and therefore are more than likely to have fish that come from different parts of the world in one tank...

As for the show quality factor, i personally dont mind it too much as long as they dont look too out of place together...

I.e a goldfish kept with tropicals...

As far as chemistry goes, the water in the rift lakes of Africa and the waters of Mexico, and Central America, and even the west coast of South America are not that different.
And the water in the Amazon is not that different than the waters of the western rivers in Africa.
In fact other than temperature issues, the North American great lakes are very similar to the African great lakes in water chemistry, as are the great lakes of Nicaragua.
I find management of different aggression issues to be more challanging.
I mix Malagasy and Central and South Americans all the time, but I do admit, it does look a bit funny, and off kilter.

When I was still starting in this hobby which was a long time ago I use to mix fish from different rivers but as time pass by I have learned alot and now I no longer mix them. :)

^ i guess that also plays a big part in all this, which is how knowledgeable the keeper is about where certain species of fish come from...

I don't think the water differences are really a big deal but I just don't mix them. It just looks weird to me having Africans in with new worlds
