Okay I have two of my cichlids the yellow and black one (in my photo gallery) and another one that is an Melanochromis johanni(Electric Blue) and an Auratus (Godlen Mbuna) - pictures under this.

Okay well the johanni is building what looks like a nest to me. He has 2 egg spots as the auratus does not seem to have any and if it does its hard to see ( I couldnt find it) and I looked online to see why my johanni was building sand into a huge pile it takes sand in its mouth and moves it into a big mound, I looked this up online and what I could find said that they do this when building a nest. Africans tend to be aggressive but mine found there equalibrium and were fine, now the johanni is extremely mean to the other two cichlids but more playful and pretective of the auratus.... and if anything gets near the mound or the auratus it is really mean and chases away the other fish.... so from seeing that and what I have read... I came to the conoclusion that maybe they will breed? mate? w/e you want to call it. Is this correct or is my cichlids just being weird??

1-johanni
2-auratus > just so you know what they look like.

Since both fish are from the Melanochromis family there is a good chance that they may breed and be successful only time will tell. :)

Seems plausible.

I bought my assorted Africans with the tank with some established mixed species couples.
Unfortunately, too many died and there aren't any couples left.

I am sorry, well I am happy that someone actually responded to this finally. They act like they are going to breed, but I havent noticed anything yet, but I am not home long enough recently to check.

Yah I have entered the potm contest the Jellyfish picture back in november I think was mine . That pic however up there is just to show what they look like, not my art work ~_^ Although mine is just a beautriful as that one up there :D

definetly they are trying to breeddepending on how many cichlids you have in you tank and how much they are being disturbed I have a breeding pair of labidochromis hongi and when i have too many fish in the tank it makes it hard to concentrate only on themselves. another thing is maybe one of them is mature enough to breed and the other one isn't.

oh another thing if the pictures are from your tank the auratus is definetly a female thats the colors of them. Males look blackish and silvery

They arnt from my tank but those two are def. what they look like colors and everything =) Yah I have 5 all together. I might seprate them and see what happens.

Hi Ash, how big is the auratus? The male colours start showing at around 6-7cm, 2,5-3in. They are both melanochromis and will breed if there isn't a female for the johannii. I would avoid the cross breeding if at all possible. The auratus should be big enough, going by the pic, to vent. This will aloow you to then look for the oposite. Female johannii tends to be a nondescript orange sort of colour. :naughty: :clap  :headbang2 :mwave:
