I've always said that I'm not much of a cichlid guy, but I want to try making a 40 breeder tank I have into an african tank.

If possible, what types would work, and how many? Also, what else would I be able to put with it?

You could probably put some dwarf Mbuna in there like Saulosi or Demasoni. I think a 55g is the more comfortable base for AC's but I believe the dimensions of a 40g breeder might be similar in length.

If you go the Demasoni route, just make sure to get 10+ so aggression is spread out, they are awesome fish but are super intolerant of their own kind.

The male/female Saulosi color combo is always nice, like so:

This does sound like the best combo for you since they are smaller then most and the color combination between the male and females are stunning together.. would be very nice set up until you decide if you like the africans and want to go bigger tank..

I will have to check them out. This will be my first crack at africans so I want something hardy and fairly easy to care for.

In my experience africans are very easy to care for and hardy as long as you dont feed them a high protein/ fat diet... high ph like around 7.4 + up to 8.6 or so and you should be good to go...

ditto

If you are new into africans may I suggest labidochromis caeruleus and pseudotropheus acei? They are one of the more peaceful mbuna. They tend to better over stocked for keeping aggression levels down. I would put about 15 mbuna in your tank. Is it 48'' long?

Actually I still have a couple 55's and a 60, I could move some things around and make one of them an african setup.
