my question is when you are at walmart or any pet stores where they are selling African cichlids assorted ... how do you know what your buying because i will be in the market for some African cichlids by the end of this week after my current stock leaves me : ( how ever i just want to know about the "assorted African cichlids" and what im getting into? thanks

most those fish are hybrids.. and theres really no telling... unless you can recognize the fish yourself cause theres no hope for most pet-store employees (except at legit lfs)

once i got lucky and found a yellow lab in there... picked him up for 3 bucks : )

i wouldnt buy any fish from my neighborhood walmart.. maybe yours has a more respectible aquarium area

very true...most of the time they are hybrids but you might get lucky....At my LFS (non chain stores) they always have assorted tanks where they just throw in some lesser quality or very small cichlids but never any hybrids at a few stores.

there was a nice lab all yellow with a black stripe over the dorsal fin i think it was a lab but there were some wierd lookin ones like a calico peacock

acctually the peacocks were labled peacocks but the were assorted that was at the lfs they also had the lab mixed in with med assorted cichlids and wal mart is assorted cichlids im gona check them tomarrow n see what the got

i would reccomend buying your africans from tanks that are properly labled rather than the assorted tank becuase you never know how they will come out regarding color, size, and especially aggression levels

for bottom feeders i always have synodontis catfish...I have kept african lace catfish, synodonits soloni, synodontis euruptus and a few more. It is really not tht effecient to keep these because they will increase to the bioload but it all depends on what you want your stock/tank to look like

Purchasing fish at walmart is like playing russian roulette. You never know what species it is and if it is diseased. Walmart has a horrible reputation for the poor care, identification and quality of the fish they sell.
The best way to find quality fish IMHO is to qoogle your state and aquarium society. Find the website of a society near you and look through their classified section.
