Hi All,

As any experienced reptile enthusiast knows, accounts concerning the size and aggressive nature of various snakes are usually highly exaggerated. The Black Mamba, however, comes close to living up to the legends that surround it, and has long been among the most feared of all African snakes. In the course of a lifetime spent working with venomous snakes in the wild and captivity, I’ve come to regard it as deserving of a special degree of respect. Today we’ll take a look at its natural history and behavior. Read more here http://bit.ly/10OMuvE

I am afraid of snakes but that was a good article. Why is there such a lack of antivenin in Africa is it a money thing? It would be my guess but I really don't know anything.

Hi,

Thanks for the kind words. Yes...money, lack of doctors and medical facilities...most victims are in rural areas far from medical care, often in countries ravaged by wars and/or serious social problems. Antivenin id very expensive to produce and must be replaced periodically. No immediate answers in sight, as far as I know. Best, Frank

what about the green mamba? is she much different to the black one?

Hi Akira,

The second photo here is of a green; there are 2 species of Green, plus the jameson's (please see note under "Range" in above article. They are similar to the black in many ways, but spend more of their time in trees, rooftops, etc. Best, Frank

thank you very much for that information. I have alot of respect for such animals. I´m glad they don´t live in Japan.
