I'm making plaintive steps towards getting back into the game!

The last year has been a horrible year for me. Divorced, bankrupt, dog died, lost my truck, sold my guns, etc. Basically, my life's been a country song. LMAO

Anyway, Things are starting to stabilize for me. I've got a place, I've got money coming in, and most importantly, I've got my son!

Now that the important things are taken care of, I'm really tempted to take my good old 150 that I have in the shed and set it up. Unfortunately though, that is the absolute largest tank that I have the means to house right now.

I'd like some ideas and input on what to do. I really don't want to do a specimen tank, gotta get that out of the way right up front. Anyone who's been around for a while knows that I have a taste in very large fish that require a lot of space, so most of the 'monsters' are out for me. That being said, I'm thinking about going with 6-8 clown loaches, a pair of imperial loachs, a red tail black shark (don't judge me! LOL) and a trio of pictus.

The problem is, all of those are bottom dwellers lol. I really don't know what to do with the middle and top layers. I'd kind of like to have fish that have movement and color and who will sort of play nice. I'm thinking maybe SD's? A buttload of danios at the top? Maybe a tatauaia as a centerpiece? Lots of movement and some color is important as my little dude would like the tank better that way.

Tell me what you'd do! Thanks guys!

I know you are fond of charachins so how about some pink or yellow tails? Smaller species of Wolf community maybe?

Good to see you back at it again.

your idea of having smaller fish on top with pictus cat is not gonna work out IMO. Maybe don't get the cat and you can put a bunch of colorful community fish for the top and middle level.

Angels, spotted Silver Dollars, red tailed Black Shark.....maybe two( no judgement friend...) shoot....with clowns on the bottom, you could have Rams, Gourami, Rainbow Killifish, ...the list is endless...
It's good to hear things are turning around...my life sounds like a country song more often than not..hahaha!! But keep smiling and maybe ask the little man what he likes...then get a BUNCH of them!

Great to hear that you're getting back on your feet!
As soon as I read "suggestions" and "150g" my first thought was "Tats!"..so ye, go with three of those.

Glad to hear things have stabilised for you :)

in regards to the tank, I love danio's both regular and giant; so I think that would make for a stunning display if you managed to get at least 100-200

Again it's great to have you back Rob and even better to see you and your son together. I know I gave you a suggestion already but here's another one that might be cool.

Instead of a group of SD's you could try a group of Tiger Scats. They're rarely available but a lot came in recently to the States. Usually it's years before they'll be available again. I've got a group of 7 that I've fallen in love with. These guys are eating machines, they even eat brown hair algae and they're always on the move. They're a nice change of pace from SD's IMO and would go with your striped Clown and Imperial loaches. A nice center piece for that might be a Zebrina pike. Between the colors and different body shapes I think it'd make a decent display.

Honestly Rob... I think you will get 'bored' of the stock you are listing.. in.. 4 months tops! After you get bored.. you will be looking for monsters again. Just my two cents. I turned my 1000 gallon bowfront into a Discus tank, and although it looks great... I don't even give it 5 mins per week of my time. I hate that tank! lol

So I can relate to this thread in more ways than one. But I'll keep it to the fish keeping side of things lol. I currently have a 4' 120 with 6 large clown loaches, and will be upgrading to a 5' 150 in a few weeks. I had spotted silver dollars and a flagtail with them. SD's were out competing the flagtail for food. Swapped them for filament barbs. But now the loaches are keeping the flagtail from eating properly, so I'm going to rehomed the flagtail. Thought about a pink tailed chalceus, but the body shape seemed to similar to the filament barbs for me. I actually have three African tiger scats being shipped to me tomorrow. So for now my stock list is 6 clowns from 5" to 9"+, 5 filament barbs, and soon to be 3 tiger scats. Right now the 6 clowns, filaments, and flagtail are pushing it in the 120. The 150 will have a sump so the extra volume will be nice, but I could really use a 180. Just don't have the space.
