when i do a water change i add prime to my tank to remove chlorine ,and chloramine.. this is all i have ever used .. and as of late when i do a water change my fish seem to breathe hard for a few hours.. not sure why but by morning everything seems fine.. what do you guys use? oh my water params are nitrite 0 ammonia 0 ph is around 7.4-7.6 , nitrates are 15ppm

i used to have piranhas now i have cichlids .. south american . should i use an air bar in the tank?

If you have a lot of surface agitation in the tank, an air bar is not generally necessary in most circumstances. That being said, my tank has a lot of surface agitation, but I added a couple of airstones because the tank is kinda high. It couldn't hurt if you want to add extra aeration.

I don't add anything, have well water.

If one just sticks the hose back in the tank, under the water level (no splashing, no bubbles formed) that will happen to the fish. Hardly any dissolved O2 in the new water, probably more that than the conditioner.

thats what i was thinking of doing angler.i also add aquari salt when i do the water change. i just angled the spray bars to push closer to the surface. now they are making little arches out of the water.. i am running 4 rena xp4's on the tank lol i thought that would blast fish against the walls

Make sure you don't have all of the flow in the tank pointing towards the surface. Point at least two of your spray bars towards the bottom to generate flow in a different direction to eliminate dead spots. That suggestion is assuming you don't have any addition pumps/powerheads taking care of that. 4 xp4's, how big is your tank?

I've noticed also that my african cichlids have been breathing hard after water changes, and some have died recently. I also use prime right after new water is added.

Today, I tested the tap water, which is the primary source for new water, and found the ammonia is 1ppm. Before, it has alway been 0ppm. Don't know what happened, and always took it for granted that the tap water's ammonia has been 0ppm. At least two years ago.
So I suggest that you test your tap water, and check the parameters. May need to add extra prime to neutralize the ammonia in the water. I didn't bother to test for nitrite in my tap water since ammonia is already high in my opinion.

I'm also hoping some of the other members on the forum may have a solution to bad water parameters from the tap.
