I have a Fluval 404 and Fluval 304 running on my 55g. Does that seem like too much flow for a 55? I got fed up with my HOB making noise and decided to put the 304 on there to replace it.

overkill for me... if you want the best HOB get aqua clear it's the best.

how mang gph each? all my tanks turn over 7-8Xs per hour. for you that around 350-400gph

I already had the 305 sitting around when I decided to retire my aquatech 30-60. Water sure is clean!!

The combined flow on those filters is ~7.5x water turnover per hour in my tank. Assuming it's a bit less with filter media, that's perhaps a 5x water turnover each hour.

Is there a target water turnover for a plated tank or non-planted bank in gph? At what point does good filtration become too much filtration?

as long as your fish can relax in one spot and dont get pushed around by the current then it is fine...

Toe - we were typing at the same time. 404 is rated at 225gph and 304 is rated at 185gph, so total flow is 410gph or about 7.5x.

Besides the (IMO) superior filtration to HOB filters, I also prefer canisters because much more equipment is hidden under the tank.

This brings me to ask the same question...I just got my 75G setup and I've got a 600GPH mega flow draining and returning with a 950GPH mag drive (5' of head at most)... I then have a 400GPH emperor polishing.. Give or take thats about 900-1000GPH...is that too much? lol Should I add more....more is always more satisfying...:)

you can never have too much filteration but you could possibly have too much current. Too much current could stress your fish out, if you do not have any dead spots for your fish to rest

I'm and advocate for adequate redundant filtration. IMO "over filtration" does little but waste money.

However, it's nice to have an extra seeded filter to setup a new tank.
