About a year ago a mate text me about some Maskaheros argentea in our lfs, back then they where about 3 inch. Went in the same lfs today for the first time in ages to get some prime and saw some 4 inch argentea, after a quick chat the shop assistant confirmed they where the same ones. So when buying your fish remember they could be a couple of year old to start.

So if you took them into your tank they wouldn't grow anymore ? Or possibly yes with good water quality and space ?

I think they would, probably more common then we think
I agree bc I've gone back to many lfs after months and they still have the same stock same fish and they never grow always stay the same so unless a lot ppl shop there and it's very busy I'm sure a lot of shops do this

I have definitely done some amazing things as far as inducing growth spurts and packing the size on fish that were in the LFSs for a looooong time in too small tanks. We all know Petco and Petsmart and corporate chains are notable for doing this, but most LFSs in general feed all ectotherms just enough to keep them alive, despite the fact that larger specimens fetch higher prices in most cases. Not saying a 3' RTC or a Pacu will, will but most other instances a 12" Vieja will go for ALOT more than a 4" Vieja and so-on w/ many species
