I have an agressive male jack dempsey. He is about 6 inches and used to be housed with a 10" clown knife until i had to sell the knife because the jack was beating him up. The jd is in a 55 gallon and I was wondering if i could get a tankmate that would be ok with him. If i upgrade it will only be into a 75 gallon scence i don't have the clown knife any more. If i still had the knife i would have been getting a 150 gallon but don't need it any more and want the money for other things. I'll post pictures by tommorow!

Would love to see pic's of your JD. I don't think the JD would allow anymore tankmates if he's that aggressive. If intent on adding tankmates i'd at the very least rearrange the decorations of the tank. Otherwise you may have an easier time adding tankmates with a tank upgrade.
Once a fish owns the entire tank, it's hard to ad others, because it thinks of the entire tank as its personal territory. Even if a new fish is large or considered tough, it's at a distinct disadvantage against the original landholder.
If you change tanks, it would be good to ad all new fish and the old at the same time, with a rearranged decor. Do not put the old fish in and gradually try to add others.
This is the reason many tanks where fish grow up together are successful, even if they have fish that wouldn't normally go together. A hierarchy has developed and a mutual respect has evolved. Or why a crowded tank works if enough filtration and water changes are provided.

picure doesnt work. and if u do end up being succesful almost any agresive cichlid will live with the jackdemsey.
