Ive had these severum for about a year
Past few days the green severum has been attacked and has bite marks and stressed etc
Any suggestions to quell the aggression?
I added some more hidding spots but he has not been taking refuge
Add dithering fish?image.jpeg

Dither fish might help but I doubt it. What size tank is it? Any other fish in it already. Could just be the case that the fish are getting mature and 1 decided that his territory is the entire tank. Might also be courtship if you have a male and a female. More details needed to get a better picture

Agreed ^ if they want to fight, they're gonna fight.

Looks like a female rotkeil in breeding colors. My pair look like that now and they just spawned. The green sev looks male. After my pair laid eggs, they were still lip locking and each got basically teeth mark scratches above their mouth. After a few days it stopped and they both healed up and now are guarding the fry. You can either keep an eye out and wait to see if they spawn, separate them, or maybe try turning down the temp and see if that helps.

In another tank I have a male notatus that was chasing a female rotkeil and I ended up moving her to a quarantine tank. She wasn't in breeding color, which is why I decided to move her. I will put her back after turning the temp down and she has a chance to eat more and heal.

Agreed with choomanji. Looks like breeding colors to me as well, I'd keep monitoring it and if it's only minimal damage and they're not aggressively chasing each other let them be but if the two start fighting more aggressively you may need to separate them. Luckily when my severums started breeding there was no fighting whatsoever. Good luck and gorgeous fish you have there

+1 on pre-spawn behavior. The notatus looks male from the picture and the rotkeil looks female. Keep an eye on them and see what happens, although I wouldn't distribute any fry if they do happen to spawn.

I've also had very aggressive male severums in the past. I had one that I could not keep with anything besides large central American cichlids. He was an awesome fish, but just a bit of a bully.

thanks you guys are awesome

if i get lucky enough to get some fry
do i have to worry about the overflow etc....

That's really up to you. First time cichlid parents normally have issues the first few time so if you really want the fry I'd say remove. Personally I'd let it run the corse. Normally (though not in my case) if they pair, they will do so again.

Yes they will more than likely breed again if they already did once. Syphon out the fry if you want to keep them. But I'd say leave them in there. Maybe get a male rotkeil to breed with your rotkeil female and female green for your green male. Unless you like the hybrid Severums I've never seen any yet
