Anyone else’s Uaru *******s at feeding time? Mine get super territorial around the food and nip at anything that comes close, everything in the tank is peaceful as well.

Mine was quite peaceful all the time but I lost him at 4 inches or so.

Lots of larger SA cichlids are aggressive eaters. Uaru are one of the most voracious when it comes to appetite so this isn’t a big surprise.

I have 11 in a 8’ tank with Severums. They are aggressive eaters but they don’t take runs at other fish. One thing they do constantly is pick at the driftwood branches. I have a ton. I really believe driftwood is a positive in promoting Uaru health and growth.

Because Uaru are primarily vegetarian in nature, they usually spend the entire day grazing on everything from algae, to higher plants, even terrestrial fruit, leaves, and beaches, like cattle.
Its no surprise if you feed at certain times, instead of small amounts all day long, that they would be gluttons.

I've had 2 uaru's (10 inch or so) which were the most agressive fish i've ever owned. Worse then fish like Jaguars, Kelberi, Festae, Rivelatus, Crenicichla Atabapo, Nandopis Haitiensis I've kept. And even worse then the terror pack of Chiapaheros Grammodes I had.

They killed a tiger shovelnose, a petenia and a hoplarchus psittacus. And would have killed a lot more fish if i hadn't separated them. Absolutely crazy territorial and if they felt like it they would go through the entire tank to find a victim to chase and bully.

from all i've heard this was an exception for Uaru's. But for me: never again

Very interesting, I was under the impression they would be mellow as well. Mine are pretty peaceful most of the time, but when I feed, they act like the food is their eggs and they basically guard it
