Just decided on SUMP/refugium for my monster 75g LED gro-light planted discus bullet tank -- sump will keep CO2 reactor, ATO and heater out of sight. Duh.
This sump will be outside on the patio, plumbed thru wall into living room. So my idea is to build it using a picnic cooler as the vessel, so outside temp won't pull aquarium temp.
Anyone want to help me with sump/refugium design? Sump/fuge will be physically below main tank, fed by drilled standpipe, return by powerhead I assume.

dont use a cooler, try using a rubbermaid tote

A powerhead will not have enough head pressure to lift and return the water.
I don't see a problem with the cooler, it will help keep the water from overheating or cooling. Think of it as a rubbermaid that's insulated.

like your 500g project!
I'm thinking a BIG powerhead will do the job. I already use one to lift water changes the the same height.

G luck on keeping it outside. I had a 55 gallon with a 50 gallon sump, I kept the sump in the garage which was uninsulated. The heaters never shutoff in the winter, When I had the tank and sump inside I used much less heat because the house was heated.

why use BIG powerhead when you get can get a pump that will lift more water at a cheaper price. imo get a pump
