Hey guys,

I just picked up a 5" cobra pike and placed it into a 100 gal with dats ranging from 4"- 6.5". I was under the impression that a lone pike addition to a tank of dats would work.

Well...the pike is going after the dats non stop. Will the cobra eventually settle down or will the mix just not work out?

All the fish have plent of room and hiding spots.....maybe I should just wait it out?

Thanks all

the pike I had would harass my dat non stop.
It almost became food, but Repair took it off of my hands.
I heard they were wonderful so I had to try one. I tried keeping one. Now I can say that I dont like them. From my experience the pike will have to go, or the dat will have to go.

If pikes start not liking a fish, they will CONTINUE not liking a fish. One definately has to go. I've never kept dats with pikes, sooo I'm gonna make the assumption cuz this is the second case that pikes and dats only work in some instances. I've had my pikes from xingu I to marmorata with all sorts of cichlids with relatively low aggression for the most part. I guess dats are just an easy target or sumptin. Try it with Crenicichla acustirostris...;)...they are more 'placid' of the pikes.

I've come to the conclusion that pikes don't work out that well with cichlids. I don't keep the more aggressive centrals and i'm always finding shredded fins and fish that ussually swim around alot lurking somewhere in the back of the tank when housed with pikes. i think you need some sturdy aggressive fish to go with most pikes thats why i've gotten rid of most of my pikes but hey i had to give them a try. Just like my centrals better.

Did you get rid of your acustirostris and cobras?! Dude, you shoulda looked me up!! Yeah, pikes are more aggressive, and most will not work too well wit most fish...gotta plan it out properly. Geos, Satanoperca, and the like aren't great candidates...lol....

Geo's and Santanoperca are South American. I tried them with Argentea, Pearsi and in my breidohri tanks and i just didn't see it as something that was going to work over the long haul. I still have 1 last pike in my arsenal lol. Did someone tell you i had them with Geo's?

No, I was just saying the cichlids that generally DO not do good with pikes...haha. I've kept my pikes with geos with out much problem, just gotta watch it. I keep their bellies plump too. But yeah, pikes do seem to do best with larger, more aggressive cichlids like pbass, festae, Caquetaia. Most CA cichlids get owned by them too, haha, so its a struggle finding out which ones can be kept together. I'm kewl with just pike tankz though....with some dithers. BTW....have you heard from Jon or Don? They haven't been on in a while...:S

I saw them last weekend at the RMCA auction but only briefly.

As u know Mike - we have lottsa pikes with lottsa Cichlids, they do better in a community tank & are actually pretty good with other fish. Until someone messes with them, then they assert their dominance. See u in Chicago . . . . . . . . . . .
