Ok now my tank is at issue and that is not cool. I have established my little goldfish tank. 40 Gallon and have been slowly stocking it since it cycled in. I started with one fancy and he was all good. Lots of cover in the form of artificial plants for him. Had a real plant but well I can kill silk so real one died too. Anyways after a while of him in their I moved in my black moor he is happy in there and the two of them have gotten along like best friends since. No concerns with them for almost 2 months together (for those worried the moor is hand fed so he gets to eat.) Both are still very small. Anyways so fancy and moor no problems. Now with tank established I decided to finish it off and add the last fish to go in with them so I acquired another fancy (they are both red ryukin I figure from what I have read). New guy is about a quarter of a fish larger than the other two but not much with long flowing tail. Well it seems the old fancy doesn't much care for this as it is being very aggresive towards it. Whenever the new guy swims near one side of the tank the fancy goes after and starts bumping underneath the new guy until he chases new guy to middle of tank. The new guy looks terrified and starts swimming away as soon as fancy looks at him. From everything I read this tank is a great size for three fancy goldfish so what is the issue? Any help greatly appreciated!

maybe you can try to add a divider temporarily so that the victim of the aggression can fully acclimate to the tank

maybe the new guy is a gal, I have a well stocked 25 gallon with a ryukin and oranda and the ryukin is constantly bumping under the oranda and chasing it all around the tank . my theory is that the ryukin is horny.

Ok. Why would he not being acclimated to tank be an issue as far as the old fish becoming aggressive? Also he shows no other signs of stress eats well swims happily no clamping of fins.

Refer to my earlier post, it is quite likley the new tank mate is a female. and that the original 2 tank mates were both boys.
There is a way to sex gold fish look at the anus if I am rembering correctly the males protudes out a bit mor than the females.
It is likley the male is attempting to get the female to lay eggs.

Ok little dudes are all seperated. however when I looked at the new guy more closely I can see breaks in his tail fin. He has this amazing long cool fantail so thats not real cool. I'm assuming its from the other nipping at him. Question I have is are these little fellas ever going to get along or should I be finding someone a new home?

i always found fancy goldfish to be temprimental, if there are signs that the other fish is causing the shredding in its fins then i would advise seperating them as a fancy wont take much of a beating before it gives up and either dies or becomes ill.
its really hit or miss as to which fish will mix and its normally down to the individual as i have kept comets, veils, black moors and single finned varieties in a tank and not had any problems.
but i have also had problems where the fan tails in another tank were constantly beating my native rudd !
IMO i would split them up and start looking for some other tank mates and always divide the tank when aclimiting the new adition to give it the best chance of establishing some space and getting used to its new surroundings !!
hope this helps a little

That behavior is a male wanting to breed. If you look on his gill plates you should be able to see faint white dots (called tubercles). Females don't have them. I've got my 3 male Goldfish together and my female fancy Goldfish lives with Dojo Loaches. She'd get harrassed too much if she were in with the boys.

I know about the little white spots on the gill plates and about two weeks ago the same ryukin was right randy but didn't mutilate the moor. However I see no white spots on him so I'm thinking they just not big on new guy.

If I read this right they aren't going to get along ever so I'm wasting my time by seperating and need to find the little guy a new home?

His fins got pretty tore up I know that take long time to heal as well. But is there anyway to aid him in recovery?
