"ah, you keep flowerhorns?"

An island somewhere......
Two guys in the last two weeks have stopped by my house to buy either fish and/or aquariums. Both guys, while browsing my collection of cichlids stopped at my tank and said.... "Ah, you keep flowerhorns?".

I almost asked politely asked them to leave! They were looking at my Jeff Rapps Trimacs. It seems that Amphilophus are all mistaken for Flowerhorns.... I just chocked it up for being miseducation. (at least they didn't say "Oscars" :irked:) Hopefully I don't sound like a snob.... just sharing!

Trimac's do look a lot like flowerhorns if you don't know your stuff Sean. Next time just pass em' off as a high grade import and off em' for $300 a pop - buy me some fish tanks - haha!

I can empathize with your situation; I have had a pet store owner say that to me. I could not leave though, since I had to buy stuff from him :)

I've also had another person say "nice oscars" more than once to my trimac pair. I didn't mind, atleast he gave my fish a compliment:)

What gets to me though is someone on MFK saying that to my trimac, since I hope most people on MFK, and on this sub-forum, and more than average in terms of their knowledge of and the difference between pure-bred cichlids, and hybrids. Thankfully, that hasn't happened all that often in recent times that I've posted pics. of my Trimac male.
 
"TheOscarguy" should be "The Trimac Guy".......... esp. with that beauty that you posted! Man-o-man.... nice!

Its time to educate. When buyers come check out my stock, I try to inform them about it, but that makes me hesistant on selling the fish to them because of the amount of care I have put into my fish.

At school, it does bug me a bit when students/parents/staff see my red devil pair and say, "wow, those are big goldifsh," or "when can we fillet them?"
