use your net, and try and net the big floating stuff, turn off your filter for a few hours and let the sand settle then turn out your filter, might take a few days.
Dont run your filter unless you absolutely have to, the san can get sucked up and ruin it. I used a powerhead with a sponge over the intake when I added some very loose sand sand to one of my tanks. I had taken more than 24 hours to settle so I got impatient and it helped a bit.
Definetly let it settle for the better part of a day, then turn on a filter to get rid of the cloudiness. Once it settles, the risk of ruining a filter with it should be minimal. Or if you have a Magnum 350, don't sweat sand getting in it... mine has survived sand granules getting in it for a year now.
When I put Aquaquartz Silica Pool filter sand in my 125g, I didn't wash it. The water of course got very cloudy but my Magnum 350 filtered it all out in a day and it was crisp and clear.
Then again...pool filter sand is much much cleaner out of the bag than what you put in.
Trust me it would be easier to remove the sand and clean it and then do like a 75% change. I dumped it in after lightly cleaning it and it took 2 months to clear up.
