Ahoy there forumers

I'm new here as you can tell :p I've named myself after a mythical fish monster. appropreate for monster fish keepers forums I do believe.

Anywho here comes the help portion

I'm a university student doing research into the behavior of siamesefighting fish. I'm currently looking into the effect of predation on aggressive displays. I need to find a video of a snakehead to present to fighting fish... but a video of just a snakehead swimming around is really hard to find. If anyone can help out with this it would be grealty appreciated!

Thanks and greets all!

Hiya Sahagin, welcome to MFK.
I am curious if the betta will actually process a flat screen image as a threat without scent and lateral line stimulation.

ahoy there guppy

There havent' been that many studies into the sensory perception of bettas. Or at least I haven't found and recent papers on it :p Research that I’ve done states that fish sensory perception is mainly visual. Last couple experiments I performed on bettas showed that their aggressive behavior can be stimulated by male colour (red ore blue) and that shape (the appearance of a fish) played a lesser role. I just waved a blue ball on a stick in front males and they started flaring. This lead me to wonder if there were visual cues to recognize predators. Hence the video, having something moving around in the tank with it would scew results. Past studies have shown models less effective in generating results in general.

Video is relatively new tool, oddly enough, in analyzing fish behavior. Probably since we don’t know enough about their perception to know if they see a tv image like we do. There has been some video work sticklebacks that gave significant data, so I want to give it a try with bettas.

And trust… it’s just an undergrad project I have no funding nor anywhere to keep a fish in a dorm after I’m done :p

Zorro: greets!

WTF is goin on??? Ok, so I'm settled back in FL and am getting things back in order. Anyways....I would imagine that lateral line stimulation is neccessary or scent since a mirror does the trick with a betta. I would think a vid. would work as long as the images would process like when they see into a mirror.

Like when you put a mirror next to the tank there's no lateral line stimulation

I was just thinking that an anti-predation response might not follow the same keys as a mating display. Either way, the experiment will gain new info. Afterall if you find out that they don't respond to images of predators but do flare to images of other bettas it opens a whole new line of enquiry about how they process information.
