My rhom of 17 years finally passed away on Sunday. Looking to pick up an aimara. Just wanted some feedback on my tank setup. Plan is to grab a small aimara.

180g glass tank
3xAC110s might need to upgrade when gets larger
Mag 8 running 24/7
Temp set at 79 degrees
Hard water so have added Indian almond leaves
24/7 finnex 48in light that runs in the 24/7 setting
Bare bottom with one large piece of fake driftwood
Planning to do weekly 40% water changes
Planning to feed once every 3-4 days

The hope is to keep this guy in this setup for 2-3 years and then upgrade. If I warm up to the aimara the plan is to keep as long as my rhom. I did many things wrong with my rhom for the first years that shortened his lifespan that I want to avoid here.

Please provide your input! Currently have some food in the tank to keep BB alive.

Might need stronger filtration as you recognized. The 24/7 light should be turned off when you go to bed and back on when you wake up. And you might wanna wait till he's atleast 8" I'd say to start feeding him every couple of days. Though I'm sure it'd be fine regardless. You might get bored though, small aimara hide a lot from my understanding.

The light has a 24/7 setting so the light level during the morning and night is extremely low. Pretty much a red light to simulate dawn and blue light simulate moon. The bright light is only on during midday which I have screen material to dampen. Pretty cool and was using it for my piranha that are not fans of light.

The 3 AC110s actually hold more bio than a FX5/FX6 so I suspect he will outgrow the tank before he outgrows the filters.

What about lids? That is where I am concerned. I have glass tops right now, which I assume I need to weigh down? I was thinking of keeping some room between the water level and the glass tops. There is also a gap on the tops due to the use of HOB which I am not sure if it is a problem.

Sorry for the loss of your Rhom.

As what Moe said above. Perhaps more feeding if it is a juvenile and better filtration.

Yes, you will need a tank lid as Aimaras do jump a lot.

Not too sure whether you are ok with feeding small frogs to them but I find most of my wolves have good growth rates with them being part of the diet.

Lastly, do update your Aimara here. :)

How much filtration do you guys use? I was using this for my 10in rhom and it worked. Like I said, its got more bio than my FX5 had. Not being defensive, just really curious so I can plan out. Sounds like they produce more nitrate that rhoms.

Not too sure about the effectiveness as I had never used it before - my FX5 and Eheim 2217 are actually used to supplement my sump tank.

But with just a solo fish and regular WC, possibly it should be alright - especially if you can invest in better bio media

What bio do your recommend? I'm using biomax which I thought was suppose to be pretty good.

I am using mix of K1 micro, Eheim bio rings and Biohomme plus. Additional non branded ones are bioballs, Japanese mat and also some porous blocks used for ponds.

I am not one who calculates the exact space per media for beneficial bacteria; probably was just getting whatever "hot" in the market.

You may want to read up more on the filtration section of the forum; especially those who keep rays and plecos. Pristine water conditions are necessary for them. :)
