I have an 8 inch aimara who seems pretty mellow. I am tempted to try him with a tank mate. Ideally I want to try a royal knife. Anyone here successful keeping them with friends

I’ve seen people keep them with small fish like Enders. dr exum dr exum tried to keep one with severums, but it wasn’t working. I think it may be a hit or miss, may work may not.

Some have kept rays, masheer, dorado and goonch with them. I think end up being solo once increased size, tank space and tankmates are potential meals.

mine lived with a similar size pleco for some time - took out pleco as he was all up on the wolfs slime coat -

the severums- had 30 or so with no real home for them - early he killed one and did not eat it - he tasted a few, ate a 1 eyed one... it was months though - maybe killed / ate 3 or so ?

i too have a knife that needs a long term roommate - ive been considering it - the knife id presume is not very durable -

ultimately endler community may be how it goes - want something to eat left over food bits....

GL!

I think the best option is anything too small to not be food. Anything large/aggressive is too expensive an investment to be worth the risk - either for the wolf or the tankmate.

DB junkie DB junkie I remember you having your aimara with a bunch of other fish. I think it was in your giant pond. I think your lacardae took it out eventually though.

We had a few over the years.... ALL were kept with tankmates. Treat them like another fish and they act like another fish. Didn't see much difference in behavior between the different species of wolves I kept over the years and Aimara in particular....

A can only assume that my Lac caused issues with the Aimara when they approached her size, but never once did I ever witness any kind of aggression or I would have moved one or the other..... I remember many wolves going on strange hunger strikes and never getting back to normal eating - I just assumed it could have only been territorial aggression or some other issues between them as other fish in the tanks always seem to carry on like nothing was going on.

IF I was to keep Aimara again I would take the same approach - Just treat like any "normal" fish.... Would be added to a community - last fish in - as its much easier to hope he gets along with an already established tank then to hope it approves of every tank mate added one by one.
